Upper GI Examination (Esophagus, Stomach & Duodenum)
At Global Gastro and Liver Centre
An Upper GI Examination, also known as Upper GI Endoscopy or Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is an advanced and highly effective diagnostic procedure used to examine the upper part of the digestive system. This includes the esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and the first and second part of the small intestine (duodenum). At Global Gastro and Liver Centre, we offer safe, accurate, and patient-friendly Upper GI examinations using state-of-the-art endoscopic technology and expert medical care.
This procedure plays a crucial role in diagnosing a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, especially when symptoms are persistent, severe, or unexplained.
What Is an Upper GI Examination?
An Upper GI Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure performed using a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, which has a high-resolution camera and light source at its tip. The endoscope is gently passed through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, allowing the gastroenterologist to directly visualize the inner lining of these organs on a monitor in real time.
Unlike imaging tests such as X-rays or ultrasounds, an Upper GI examination allows direct observation of inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, infections, abnormal growths, and early signs of cancer. It can also be used for both diagnosis and treatment during the same procedure.
When Is an Upper GI Examination Recommended?
Your doctor may recommend an Upper GI Endoscopy if you experience any of the following symptoms or conditions:
- Persistent upper abdominal pain or discomfort
- Chronic acid reflux or heartburn (GERD)
- Difficulty or pain while swallowing (dysphagia)
- Frequent nausea or vomiting
- Vomiting blood or black stools
- Unexplained weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Chronic indigestion or bloating
- Iron-deficiency anemia due to suspected gastrointestinal bleeding
- Suspected gastric or esophageal ulcers
- Evaluation of tumors, polyps, or cancer
- Monitoring conditions like Barrett’s esophagus
Upper GI Endoscopy is also used for follow-up evaluation after treatment and for surveillance in patients with known gastrointestinal diseases.
How Is the Upper GI Procedure Performed?
At Global Gastro and Liver Centre, patient safety and comfort are our top priorities. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes 15–30 minutes.
- Preparation
Patients are advised not to eat or drink anything for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure to ensure the stomach is completely empty. Your doctor may also give instructions regarding medications that need to be stopped or adjusted before the test.
- Sedation and Monitoring
Before the procedure begins, a mild sedative is administered through an intravenous (IV) line to help you relax. Your vital signs, including heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure, are continuously monitored throughout the procedure.
- Endoscope Insertion
A local anesthetic spray may be applied to numb the throat. The endoscope is then gently guided through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The procedure is generally painless, though you may feel mild pressure or fullness.
- Examination and Intervention
High-definition images are displayed on a monitor, allowing the gastroenterologist to carefully examine the digestive tract. If needed, biopsy samples can be taken, bleeding can be controlled, strictures can be dilated, or polyps can be removed during the same session.
- Completion and Recovery
After the examination, the endoscope is slowly withdrawn. You will be observed for a short time until the effects of sedation wear off. Most patients can go home the same day with minimal discomfort.
Benefits of Upper GI Endoscopy
Upper GI Examination offers several important advantages:
- Accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions
- Early detection of ulcers, infections, and cancers
- Ability to perform biopsy and treatment during the same procedure
- Minimally invasive with no surgical incisions
- Quick recovery and minimal downtime
- Helps guide effective treatment planning
Because of its precision, Upper GI Endoscopy is considered the gold standard for evaluating upper digestive tract disorders.
Safety and Possible Risks
Upper GI Endoscopy is a very safe procedure when performed by experienced specialists. Complications are rare but may include:
- Mild throat irritation or soreness
- Temporary bloating or gas
- Minor bleeding (especially if biopsy is taken)
- Reaction to sedative medications
- Very rare risk of perforation of the digestive tract
At Global Gastro and Liver Centre, we follow strict safety protocols and international standards to minimize risks and ensure patient well-being.
After the Upper GI Examination
Following the procedure, you may experience mild throat discomfort or drowsiness due to sedation, which usually resolves within a few hours. You will be advised to avoid driving or making important decisions for the rest of the day.
If a biopsy is performed, the results are typically available within a few days. Your doctor will discuss the findings with you and recommend further treatment or follow-up if necessary.
